A rundown 1960s home finds new life as a charming cottage in one of Canberra’s most admired suburbs
AINSLIE HOME Renovation & EXTENSION
Standing amongst the leafy and quaint suburb of Ainslie, a young but growing family looked to VDARA to create their own cottage retreat. As an architect, the owner had drawn their visions for an extension and renovation, allowing our team to interpret their goals and develop the perfect built outcome for them.
With high visibility from the suburban streets around, it was just as essential to transform the exterior as it was the interior. From the outside, the home is a testament to its era with weatherboard cladding stretching across all sides, combined with a corrugated metal roof and a stunning stone chimney.
Stepping inside from the charming front porch, the space is a functional, open living area designed to enjoy the beautiful fireplace through the colder months, to lounge about in front of the TV or to gather in the kitchen as a family.
Combining modern design with the quirks of a classic 60s home, a mix of sleek and natural materials were selected. Stretching through the home is wooden vinyl flooring, bringing warmth to the cool-toned and light-filled space. The prominent use of bright white cladded cabinetry opens up each room and is perfectly paired with a selection of matte black fixtures and met with soft grey walls.
Within the bedrooms, the owners are spoilt with storage and room to grow. To allow opportunity to alter how the spaces are used, a neutral yet timeless palette was carried into the bedrooms. White panelled wardrobes, rich grey walls, and soft carpet create a holistic style throughout. Forming part of the extension is an ensuite designed with modern amenities and beautiful warm-toned tiling.
Despite the complications of a global pandemic, our team maintained momentum and worked diligently to build the home of this growing family’s dreams. Now a charming cottage, the renovation and extension brought a new sense of life to this corner block in Ainslie.
